Extremely Rare Rolex Flat-Back Ref. 2765 – Error-Proof Dial, Double-Signed H.G. Bell

An exceptionally rare and possibly unique Rolex Flat-Back from 1939. Ref. 2765, featuring a black gilt Error-Proof dial—one of the rarest early Rolex dial configurations, and virtually unknown in double-signed form. To the best of our knowledge, only one example of this exact configuration is known.

The dial is double-signed by H.G. Bell, Salisbury, which was the capital of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). H.G. Bell was an official Rolex retailer in the 1930s, though very little documentation survives today.

Beyond the world of horology, H.G. Bell is historically noted for designing the iconic Flame Lily brooch, presented to Princess Elizabeth by her parents on her 21st birthday during the royal tour of Africa—an exceptional royal connection that further enriches the story behind this watch.

The watch is fitted with a correct period Rolex WAB bracelet, entirely consistent with the British colonial context of Rhodesia.

A true museum-level Rolex, combining a unique black gilt Error-Proof dial, an extremely rare double signature, and a fully period-correct configuration—a piece unlikely to be seen again.
