Rolex 6265 Cosmograph Daytona MK1 from 1971 in mint condition.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6265 MK1 – 2.8M Serial (1971)
Offered here is an exceptional example of the early Rolex 6265 Cosmograph, featuring all correct MK1 details, including the rare “Tasti Tondi” pushers and a 2.8 million serial, dating it precisely to 1971.
The dial is in outstanding condition, with all tritium lume plots fully intact, aged to a beautiful creamy tone that matches perfectly with the original tritium hour and minute hands.
The watch also features the correct thick sub-dial hands and the triangle-tipped chronograph seconds hand, both typical for the very first series of the 6265.
The caseback is stamped 6262, which is correct and original for these very early 6265 models — Rolex often used leftover casebacks from reference 6262 during this transitional period.
The bracelet is original, with the clasp stamped 2nd quarter of 1971, perfectly matching the production period of the watch.
The case is in mint condition. It has been polished in the past, but to factory specifications, with strong lugs and clean edges.
In my opinion, these early MK1 6265 examples are far more interesting and collectible than the later “Big Red” versions. While only a few hundred of these early pieces were ever produced, estimates suggest that over 15,000 Big Red Daytonas were made. This makes the MK1 a true rarity — both historically and in terms of market presence.
This is without a doubt one of the finest and most complete early 6265 examples I’ve encountered — a top-tier piece for any serious Daytona collector.
