Rolex Cosmograph 6239 Lemans MKII from 1964
This exceptional Rolex Cosmograph reference 6239 dates from 1964 and has a serial number in the 1-million range. Produced during only the second year of the model’s existence, it represents one of the earliest and most distinctive executions of what would later become known as the Rolex Daytona.
Often referred to by collectors as the “Second Le Mans” or “Le Mans MK2”, this early dial does not yet carry the Daytona name. Several details are specific to this short production period. The rare star-cut 300 bezel was used only in 1964, while the unusually long and slender hour and minute hands are characteristic of watches produced in 1963 and 1964.
The glossy contrasting subsidiary dials are noticeably deeper than on later versions and are fitted with exceptionally fine, slender hands. Another important detail is the unusual “— T SWISS T —” signature at six o’clock, with a dash on either side—a configuration associated specifically with 1964 production.
Inside is the legendary manual-winding Valjoux 72B chronograph movement. With its rare period-specific details and beautifully preserved, largely original condition, this is a remarkably pure example from the very beginning of the Rolex Cosmograph story.
