Rolex Datejust 6305 “Ovettone” — Possibly Unique Grey-Beige Dial
This reference 6305 is one of the early Datejust models from the beginning of the 1950s. Its substantial Ovettone, or “Big Bubbleback,” case and red-and-black roulette date give it the unmistakable character of an early Rolex.
The grey-beige dial is extraordinary. In more than 25 years of dealing in vintage watches, I have never seen another 6305 in this colour. It may well be one of a kind.
The Swiss-made 9ct gold case bears the Geneva key hallmark of Genex SA, a case maker that also produced cases for Rolex Datejust and Day-Date models. The watch was likely intended for a British or Commonwealth market, such as the UK, Canada or Australia, but was found in the Netherlands.
The watch is in fantastic condition. The case has developed a beautiful patina, which I have deliberately left untouched, as the photographs show.
